 My philosophy of teaching English

Teacher = Gardener

When I was studying in secondary, a teacher told me that teacher was just like a gardener.  She told us that a teacher used caring, patience and time to make his/her students become knowledgeable and good human beings.  From my point of view, what the teacher said is true and I completely agree with her.  I think that a teacher¡¦s role is similar to a gardener¡¦s role.  It takes time for a seed to become a beautiful and healthy plant.  The growth of plant involves a gardener¡¦s effort.  If a gardener does not put effort, plants may not be beautiful or they may even die.  Similarly, a teacher puts effort so as to help students to become a whole person in the future.  A teacher teaches students what they need to know and cares about them just like a gardener cares about his/her plants.  A teacher is glad to see that students are having improvement.  He/she is happy that they are no longer ignorant, instead, they are knowledgeable.  This is similar to what a gardener does.  A gardener is glad to see his/her plants growing.  The plants are no longer seeds, but they are healthy plants now.  Finally, after graduation, students are capable of doing some contribution to the society.  Just like plants, when they grow up, they can do contribution to the society --- they make the environment beautiful and attractive.

Effective English teaching

Concerning the effective English teaching, I think it is important for a teacher to know the standards of the students and teach something that they can manage.  If a teacher teaches something that is too easy, students will get bored and have no interest to learn.  If the topic is too difficult, then they also lose interest to learn.   Moreover, for effective English teaching, the way that a teacher presents is very important.  In my opinion, teachers should put stress to indicate or to repeat something is important.  Teachers can write important points on the board to help students to understand.  Besides, teachers should vary the pitch so as to emphasize the main points.  Teachers should speak clearly and neither too fast nor too slow.

When I was young, teachers used a traditional way to teach me.  Now, some teachers adopt creative teaching or co-operative learning.  In my points of view, both approaches are good.   However, I think that students will get bored if we just use the traditional way.  Concerning the creative teaching, it is difficult for teachers to explain something complicated to students through activity.  Thus, I think it is effective if teachers combine the two approaches together.  First, teachers teach the basic things and rules by using the traditional approach.  Then teachers use some activities or games to consolidate what students have learnt.
